Counselling and therapy for individuals in a safe, comfortable and private setting

Welcome. My name is Rhona Mercer and I'm a Humanistic Integrative therapist based in Hackney. I work with clients face to face and online and work from locations in Stoke Newington, Haggerston, Dalston and De Beauvoir. As a fully-qualified counsellor, I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and abide by their code of ethics.

With a background in media, I have met and interviewed people from all walks of life. In my practice, I continue to work with clients from a wide range of backgrounds, who come to me to talk about their own unique challenges and experiences.

This is where therapy can be hugely beneficial and I offer a chance to talk about any problems you might be having in a confidential environment. I will help you to reflect on your situation and together we can explore it and help you to see things from a fresh perspective.

While counselling isn't about offering solutions, it is about helping you to understand yourself better and empowering you to make positive changes in your life.

How can counselling help you?

In my practice, I work collaboratively with clients and will help you reflect on what you’re bringing to therapy and support your understanding of what emerges in our work together. You might have a specific reason for seeking help, or you might just want someone to talk to in order to understand yourself better.

My aim is to help you look at the here and now, but also, when appropriate, reflect on how your past may have affected you and shaped the way you see things.

There may have been a conflict you’ve been unable to resolve and move on from, you may feel disconnected from those around you, there may be a pattern of behaviour that you’re keen to break, or maybe you feel stuck and unable to move forward with your life.

In our sessions, I will help raise your awareness of what’s really going on and work alongside you to help make sense of your situation. As your awareness increases, so too will your ability to facilitate positive change and personal growth.

"I would highly recommend Rhona. She is wonderfully kind and always made me feel comfortable to share and discuss what I was working through. I left each of my appointments with a different perspective, a step closer to understanding myself better, and better equipped to navigate challenges. "

The first step

It can be scary and confusing making the decision to contact a counsellor, but in my experience people will struggle with a mental health issue, a personal crisis, or problems with a relationship for much longer than is healthy. Sometimes a friend has provided a source of comfort, but this help can only go so far. Realising that resolving a problem requires something more means you have already taken the first step towards improving your life.

My approach

My approach is integrative, which means that I can draw on different types of therapy techniques and theories that suit your individual needs and personal circumstances. There isn’t a one size fits all approach when it comes to counselling and every client is unique. I believe that building a good therapeutic relationship is key to a successful outcome and forming a strong working alliance is something I’ll prioritise in our sessions.

Qualifications

I have an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling. I’m a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work within the BACP ethical framework. I’ve completed training in therapeutic modalities such as humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

What issues can therapy help with?

In my work as a counsellor, I’ve witnessed first-hand how beneficial it is for a person to be able to open up in an environment that feels non-judgemental, safe and confidential.

Clients come to me for help with a variety of issues, and I have experience of working with people who are suffering from a range of issues including: relationship problems (with partners, friends or family members), anxiety and depression, loneliness, low self-esteem, trauma and loss.

Counselling sessions last 50 minutes, usually taking place on a weekly basis. If you're a new client, there will be an initial assessment appointment, which enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling and whether I am the right therapist to help. Fees are available on request, please contact me.

I’m based in Hackney and work from offices in Stoke Newington, Dalston and Haggerston. I work with clients from a range of surrounding areas, including Islington, De Beauvoir and London Fields. As well as seeing clients face to face, I am also able to do online sessions.
